The Department of Metallurgical Engineering was established in the year 1981 with an intake of 30 students with an intension of supplying supervisory level human resources mainly to Visakhapatnam Steel plant, which was established by Government of India. Early batch students of this department could find excellant placements in Visakhapatnam Steel Plant. The intake was increased to 60 students from the year 2005.
The main areas of study in Metallurgical Engineering include Physical Metallurgy, Extractive Metallurgy (Iron, Steel and Non-ferrous Metal extraction), Mineral Processing, Heat Treatment of Steels, Manufacturing Technologies (Metal Casting, mechanical metallurgy and Welding), Material Testing methods like – Destructive and Non-Destructive etc. In view of the increasing demand, the department has introduced new subjects like Industry 4.0 and Computer Aided Design in its curriculum-2023. The laboratories of the Department cover all the areas of Metallurgical Engineering which includes Metallography, Heat Treatment, Mineral dressing, Destructive testing and Non-Destructive Testing, Fuels, Foundry and Metal Casting Practices and Welding Metallurgy Laboratory. All the laboratories are well furnished with the state-of-the-art equipment. Good number of students got placements during 2022-23 academic year with continuous efforts and encouragement given by The Commissioner of Technical Education, A.P. Smt. C. Naga Rani I.A.S. Out of 41 candidates cleared the all subjects in regular examination, 36 candidates got jobs during the campus interviews.
